Totally geodesic subvarieties generically contained in the Jacobian locus

I will introduce the second fundamental form of the Torelli map and totally geodesic submanifolds generically contained Jacobian locus.  I will report on a bound for the dimension of these subvarieties obtained a few years ago.  Then I will describe a recent improvement using some techniques of Hodge theory.
