Some numerical properties of variation of Hodge structures

I will explain some basic global numerical invariants of variation of Hodge structures which measure the complexity of the limiting mixed Hodge structure and the Kodaira-spencer maps. We will discuss the weight 1 and weight 2 case of curve and surface fibrations respectively.
